Welcome to Body Jammin’! If you’re familiar with my other resources, Drumagination & Interactive Rhythm, you know my fondness for activities that incorporate body percussion, or body music. In my work as a rhythm-based facilitator, I instinctively open and close nearly every workshop & drum circle I conduct with a body music activity or short performance. Now, I’ve dedicated an entire resource to what I often refer to as “portable percussion!” I hope you’ll find these body music ensembles and rhythm games as much fun to facilitate as I do. My intention in writing this book is to offer ways for you to create more options, connections and fun in your next rhythm-based event!
Let ’em Play! As you begin to explore these concepts with your group, I encourage you to be playful in your approach. Create a safe space for everyone to make mistakes ‘out loud’ and to discover ownership of these sounds, rhythms and games on their own. Allowing time in each music making session for play is an important component of any meaningful human interaction, particularly in childhood development. I believe it is through the power of play that our participants learn to trust the experience, ‘show up, create meaningful relationships and tap into the true spirit of music-making. With our help, may they be inspired to create music with the instruments they carry with them wherever they go!
